Since 2020, companies producing less than 10 full productions per season garnered support that adds up to over $100 million dollars. Big news coming from #LyricOpera just a few weeks after they announced their 2025-26 season ๐ค. In clear support of the new general director, John Mangum, Vice Chair, Penelope Steiner granted a $25 million dollar donation to the opera company. Subsequently, a seating area in the opera house will be named the "Robert and Penelope Steiner Parquet." Steiner will also receive the company’s most prestigious honor, the company highest honor.
In a statement, Steiner said: "Opera, more than any art form, embraces all artistic disciplines, spreading its light through the universe and touching all with its iconic aura," Steiner said. "Lyric has the power to galvanize, challenge, and unite individuals and cultures unlike any other artistic endeavor. Lyric’s magic will be a motivating factor for generations to come; how privileged I have been to have recognized its divination and contribute to its legacy."

According to Deadline, it was a high grossing weekend for #opera versus other films. This past weekend, the #MetropolitanOpera HD transmission of Beethoven’s Fidelio "grossed over $860k at about 800 cinemas on Saturday night." When I heard that the Swiss soprano, Edith Mathis, passed away, I immediately thought about how I first learned about her working on an opera talk on Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. As we enter into a new government administration in the Unites States, we wonder how the changes will reflect the opera industry ๐ค. Over the past 20 years, government contributions have gone up and down depending on the party and the economy at the time. While world events also exist, government funding can vary from national foundations. The global pandemic proved to be a disaster for live performances, and we believe it reflects the grant funding in 2023. Keep in mind that government funding is a small slice of contributed revenue. However, it does make a difference in the overall budget.

"Contributed Revenue" is a main source of income that opera companies thrive on to keep the lights on and the shows going. Each fiscal year, opera companies release their form 990 and the company financials from professional auditors. The total contributions fared well for #LyricOpera and #HoustonGrandOpera while the other companies in the top five decreased. The largest company, the #MetropolitanOpera, had the largest decrease while #LAOpera and Houston Grand Opera had smaller decreases. Please keep in mind that these companies are different in size, and the contributions do not include ticket or programming revenue. Also, contributions are only a small picture of the financial outlook because we still haven't looked at expenses. We will break down government funding soon.๐๐ถ๐๐ค

Eun Sun Kim will remain San Francisco Opera’s Music Director through the 2030-31 season. The major US Opera company announced this today. According to the public tax records, Kim is amongst the highest paid in the US opera industry.

When considering the number we have to consider the size of the company and the number of opera productions produced in a season. These women held posts in the finance and performance sectors of the companies. Lynne Pratt and Roberta Lane held the CFO position until a new transition after 2021 and 2022. Lynne Pratt presided over the JFK Center for the Performing Arts, the overall company over the Washington National Opera. Khori Dastoor became the CEO of Houston Grand Opera in 2021. Elizabeth Hurley is the only Chief Advancement Officer on the list. This position handles donor relations and fundraising programming. Eun Sun Kim, who became the San Francisco Opera’s music director in 2021, tops the list at over half a million as a base salary. We can not ignore the decrease in productions over the years. While this is just a snapshot, the trend was happening before the pandemic. Ever notice how so many opera companies have increased recitals and orchestra concerts over the years? We think this is because of cost. The fact that opera is expensive to produce is one thing, but the ability to recoup the expenses is another. A decrease in productions also creates a domino effect, causing fewer opportunities for singers in the traditional route nationwide. This causes a smaller group of singers to get hired at companies. "It's not the cost of opera... The true question is: how can the opera industry recoup the production cost and make a good profit? Nonprofits still have to make money to survive.
